Classroom discipline techniques that boomerang

The first role of the classroom teacher towards the learner is to assess the behavior of the students; to develop their knowledge and enhance skills; to create a good relationship as students and teachers; and to mold their students into a distinctive character by teaching good manners and right conduct. They are also the one who implements rule and regulations to organize and maintain the orderliness of his students, to be the role model of the class and to show the passion he has for his profession as teacher.

 A teacher has a  variety of roles inside the classroom. After my 10 years in elementary, middle, high school, college classrooms, in local and international settings, I have tried several positive and comfortable discipline techniques for my students. However, there are some techniques that should be avoided. They are techniques that boomerang. They are the following:

                ·      raising my voice
·      shouting
·      saying “I’m the boss here”
·      insisting on having the last say
·      using tense body language, such as rigid posture or clenched hands
·      using degrading, insulting, humiliating, or embarrassing put-downs
·      using sarcasm
·      attacking the student’s character
·      acting superior
·      using physical force
·      drawing unrelated persons into the conflict
·      having a double standard — making students do what I say, not what I do
·      insisting that I am right
·      preaching
·      making assumptions
·      backing the student into a corner
·      pleading or bribing
·      bringing up unrelated events
·      generalizing about students by making remarks such as “All you kids are the same”
·      making unsubstantiated accusations
·      holding a grudge
·      nagging
·      throwing a temper tantrum
·      mimicking the student
·      making comparisons with siblings or other students
·      commanding, demanding, dominating
·      rewarding the students

Being a teacher is quite difficult, but is rewarding.
